Dear Friends & Colleagues:

I have had the pleasure of serving on the FAR board for the past four years, and the honor of serving as the Chair this year. The real work of FAR is done by the many volunteers who serve on the board and various committees. Because of these colleagues, who are dedicated to the continued success of FAR, the first half of the 2017/2018 year has been fantastic. Our programming continues to be top notch and the reason so many of you come out every month.

During the first half of the year, our first five luncheons were attended by a total of 534 members and 28 nonprofit guests (many of whom have since joined FAR). We have also had record numbers attend our breakfast meetings with 58 attending the first four events. We believe that topics discussed are key to our success. However, another reason we continue to have strong numbers at our breakfast and lunch events is the opportunity to network. These events bring us together with some of the best and brightest, working inside and alongside the area's finest nonprofit organizations. The work of the nonprofit business leader is critical to the success of our entities, and our ability to share and learn from each other is priceless.

Our Strategic Planning Retreat last summer generated several ideas that I believe will continue to expand FAR's impact on the nonprofit business leaders in the DC area. It was deemed critical that we find a new, permanent home for lunches, which we have done in the City Club of Washington. One strategic initiative that I am most eager to see come to fruition is the FAR Conference. This one day event planned for May 23, at the Renaissance Marriott, extends our opportunity to learn from each other. I am excited and I hope you make plans to attend this inaugural event.

I look forward to seeing you soon.

Best,

Tom Harlow, CAE, CPA

Keynote Speaker

Wearing Leadership Well: The Choices You Make
Presented by Jeff Lawrence

Whether you have worked your way to the top spot in your organization, or it has been thrust upon you, you will need to make three critical choices:

- What role should I play?
- What is the nature of the challenge we are facing?
- How do I maintain perspective (and avoid getting lost, distracted or seduced?)

You will have a chance to reflect on where you are, how you got there and what to do next - not just to survive but to thrive in the complex times in which we find ourselves.
